VA Special Home Adaptation (SHA) Grant
The special home adaptation SHA grant is a federal housing assistance program administered by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). It helps eligible Veterans and service members with qualifying service-connected disabilities improve the accessibility and safety of their homes.
Through the VA special home adaptation SHA grant, approved applicants may receive funding to purchase, build, or modify a residence to better accommodate their functional needs.
All eligibility reviews, funding limits, and final approvals for the special home adaptation SHA grant are determined solely by the VA.
Eligibility for Special Home Adaptation
A Veteran or service member may be eligible for the special home adaptation program if the property is intended to serve as a permanent residence for long-term living, the home is owned or will be owned by the Veteran or a qualified family member, and the Veteran has a qualifying service-connected disability. Under the VA special home adaptation SHA grant, qualifying service-connected disabilities may include loss or loss of use of both hands, certain severe burn injuries, and specific respiratory or breathing conditions. Final eligibility determinations for the special home adaptation SHA grant are made solely by the VA.
SHA Grant Funding
For Fiscal Year 2026, the maximum amount available under the special home adaptation SHA grant is $25,350.The VA may adjust the total maximum amount annually based on construction costs.
Veterans approved for the special home adaptation program may use their grant funds up to six different times over their lifetime, up to the total maximum amount allowed by the VA.
If the full amount is not used in one year, remaining funds may be available for future approved adaptations.

- Buy a home that meets accessibility needs.
- Build a home designed to accommodate qualifying disabilities.
- Modify an existing permanent home.

How to Apply for the VA Special Home Adaptation SHA Grant
- Veterans may apply for the special home adaptation grant by:
- Submitting an application online through VA.gov.
- Completing VA Form 26-4555 (Application in Acquiring Specially Adapted Housing or Special Home Adaptation Grant) and mailing it to the VA Claims Intake Center.
- Bringing the completed form to a VA regional office.
- After submission, the VA reviews the claim and sends a written decision. Applicants may check their claim status through their VA.gov account.
