Specially Adapted Housing Grant for Veterans
The specially adapted housing program is a housing benefit provided by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). The specially adapted housing grant for Veterans offers financial assistance to eligible Veterans and service members with certain service-connected disabilities.
Through specially adapted housing, qualified applicants may receive funding to buy, build, or modify a permanent residence to meet accessibility needs. The specially adapted housing for Veterans program is intended for long-term living in a permanent home.
All eligibility determinations, funding limits, and approvals for the specially adapted housing grant for Veterans are made solely by the VA.
All Access provides accessibility modifications that align with VA-approved project scopes after grant approval.
Eligibility for Specially Adapted Housing
A Veteran or service member may qualify for specially adapted housing benefits if the home will serve as their permanent residence, they currently own or will own the property, and they have a qualifying service-connected disability. These requirements ensure that housing modifications are made to a long-term living space and directly support the medical and mobility needs of the Veteran.
Qualifying disabilities under the specially adapted housing for Veterans program may include the loss, or loss of use, of more than one limb; loss or loss of use of a lower leg together with residuals of an organic disease or injury; blindness in both eyes with visual acuity of 20/200 or less; certain severe burns; or the loss or loss of use of one lower extremity after September 11, 2001, resulting in the inability to balance or walk without assistive devices. Eligibility and final determinations are made according to VA guidelines and documented medical evidence.
Specially Adapted Housing Grant Funding
For Fiscal Year 2026, the maximum amount available under the specially adapted housing grant for Veterans is $126,526.
The VA may adjust the maximum benefit annually based on construction costs. Veterans approved for specially adapted housing may use their grant funds up to six different times over their lifetime, up to the total maximum allowed by the VA.
If the full amount of the specially adapted housing benefit is not used in one year, the remaining funds may be available for future approved modifications.
